What is Laser Hair Removal all about?

Laser Hair Removal is the #1 Aesthetic treatment being offered today. There are many laser manufacturers that make Laser Hair Removal IPL or Laser devices.  What differentiates Alma’s

Pain-Free, Hair-Free’s Soprano®XL

system from the other players is simply comfort matched with effectiveness. Many lasers that do hair removal use the straight Diode 810nm, Alexandrite 755 nm, or ND:YAG 1064nm lasers but do not incorporate Alma’s IN-Motion innovative technology. The treatment is done not in a one slow pulse at a time method, but the clinician’s hand is constantly in motion (as the name implies) and there are low energy pulses that build heat gradually versus deliver it at high energy levels and rapid pulse rates causing undue pain.

ThePain-Free, Hair-Free’s Soprano®XL uses lower energy, rapid pulses of infrared diode pulsed light that target the melanin in the hair. When the laser targets the melanin in the hair it produces heat that travels down the hair shaft through the follicle and causes thermal damage to the regenerative cells that cause the hair to re-grow. This process of only selectively targeting the hair and damaging its components and not the surrounding skin is called selective photothermolysis (SPLT) and is used by many lasers of different types.

How many treatments do I get and when?

Hair grows in three cycles, Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen or in laymen’s terms, Active Growth, Transition, and Dormant. Your treatment will only affect the hairs that are in the ACTIVE GROWTH stage.  This hair after treatment can take from 7 to 30 days to work its way out of the follicle and is not always removed instantly. Then in about 3-4 weeks the hairs that were in the next lower stage move to the stage above it.  ie: Transition Staged hair moves to Active Growth and Dormant hair moves to the Transition stage. This is why 3 treatments are minimally needed so you can reach the hairs that move to the ACTIVE GROWTH stage as they appear. Most need 3-5 treatments as sometimes the hairs take longer than 3-4 weeks to move to the next stage.

Who is not a candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Alma states that the Soprano®XL  has been tested and can treat all skin types, even tanned skin. But due to the risk of melanin confusion, it is best to not tan 2 weeks before any treatment. Another group that is not a candidate are those with medical illness or drug contraindications. Lastly, if a person has blond, light red or grey hair, there is not enough melanin in the hair for the laser to properly heat and destroy the regenerative cells.

Will my hair grow back and will any new hair grow?

No and probably yes… as long as the treatment has the right  laser settings and targets the hairs in the ACTIVE GROWTH stage, they will be removed permanently. However, as mentioned not all hair is in the ACTIVE GROWTH stage at the same time and this is why 3-5 multiple treatments spaced out several weeks apart will allow the hairs in the previous stages to move to the ACTIVE GROWTH stage.

The reasons why new hair may grow after you have finished the 3-5 treatments are many, but are mainly due to hormonal changes, diet, illness, environmental issues too. Therefore, this is permanent hair reduction not permanent hair removal. The average person removes about 80-90% of their hair if they do all the treatments and then later in life may need to come back for 1 or 2 additional ones if new growth is evident.
